Ok, after driving the past 7 hours, I had to stop and tell you how I got out of Julia Creek, after hearing they are not letting ANY cars out today…
Woke up at 6am and went directly to the gas station where the truckers were waiting to get notice when they can leave.
I asked the gas attendant what the news is for today, and she said the police are letting a few of the trucks go that are loaded with food and petrol (some have been waiting 6 days) , but ABSOLUTELY NO CARS TODAY – it is still very dangerous.
I drove away to get my morning coffee and think about how now I can hang in the library and blog all day…hahaha
The same moment I was walking into the market for coffee, the officer I asked for info from yesterday was going in. He told me yesterday that he is from a different area and that he is also stuck in Julia Creek.
Well, he was very happy to tell me that he finally gets to leave this morning. I said I just found out that there is no way I get to leave today, and that they are only letting a few truckers out. He said that is true, but they are letting him go too. Then he said that if I want I can follow him out, and that if I stay very close to his truck, it will break the water for me to make it through. Did I hesitate on that invite? NO WAY!!!!
The moment he drove up to the police barricade and told them to let me through with him, I felt “BLESSED BEYOND WORDS”!
I have to admit, I was a bit nervous with the idea of driving through the flooded areas, but I was much more elated with the feeling of freedom to let it bother me too much.
After we made it through the first few, I thought, this is no big deal. Then he motioned for me to pull over to talk with him, and he told me that I will have to follow much closer and put my car in the lowest gear for the next ones because they will be a lot deeper. Uhooo… now I’m scared.
Well obviously I made it through… but the best part is, when we got past all the flooded areas, and we said our goodbyes to go separate directions, he said that we were “very lucky” because those areas were way worse just last night.
I don’t believe in “luck” – I believe I was definitely blessed 🙂
